Nevi are commonly known as moles. They are normally red, brown to dark brown, or black sharply demarcated bumps on the skin. They are not harmful. Nevi can be congenital, present at birth, or acquired moles that develop later in life.
We are frequently asked to evaluate moles in children and adults. To classify a mole, we evaluate its color, size, border, and any asymmetries or changes. In children most are harmless, but if any suspicious lesions are found, a biopsy may be needed.
